Soil Sciences for Youth : Hidden Cities at Your Feet

This fun and exciting class will teach learners about basic soil sciences . Class One we will explore traditional soil classifications and then examine what those classifications mean in terms of how the soil came to be that way and creates the healthiest soils. We will further look at who the bio-digestors and aerators are in the soil and discuss their role in the community of soil. Students will learn how healthy soils are made, how they are degraded and how they can be made healthy again. science, chemistry, plant biology, soil biology, polyculture planting practices.
I am a certified Permaculture teacher through Permaculture Institute of North America with a P.D.C. from the Permaculture Association of the U.K. I also hold certificates in Soil Science via Cornell Small Farms Program and in Sustainable Global Food Systems via Edinburgh University. I have worked in agriculture and horticulture from a very young age and presently design and build gardens for public and private clients. I write curriculums for both public and private schools and programs.
Homework Offered
Students will be encouraged to source soil samples in medium sized jars for soil profile testing. Students will be encouraged to explore soils in whatever conditions are available. Gloves should be worn. If student has a microscope or magnifying glass they are encouraged to observe and draw what they see. PG may be needed.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Discussion of the material on the final day will constitute informal assessment of learners grasp of the topics. My hope is to spark an interest that will continue beyond this class.Grades Offered
A notebook and appropriate writing implements will be needed. colored pencils , crayons etc . Jar with lid, small shovel or sturdy spoon to dig up soil, gloves. If possible and available a microscope or magnifying glass. PG may be needed . There is alot of information to be covered but the subject matter is fun and intriguing.
I touch briefly on tillage practices and the subsequent disruption of soil structure.
