Description

Class Experience

This class is taught in English.
Students will learn about the composition of dirt. They'll learn about soil microbes and the soil ecosystem. We'll talk about the importance of healthy soil, and learn how to determine soil make-up and health.

Students will practice basic geology skills, separating and analyzing the soil in their sample.
I have a Bachelors in Environmental Science & Policy from Florida State University, and a minor in Geology. I have a passion for geology and as a gardener and permaculturalist, I have become very aware of the importance of soil education. This course is a basic geology experiment that will prepare students for further learning in geology and earth sciences. It's also a great class for kids who love to garden and be outdoors!
Please prepare by filling a mason jar (or similar) 1/2 way with a sample of dirt from near your home. I suggest gathering dirt a from a few places around the home, to get a nice mixture of sandy soil, small rocks, and dark rich soil. Fill the jar with water about 30 minutes before class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
