It turns out, there’s more to soil than just dirt! Students interested in climate science, agriculture, or microbiology will enjoy this class. In this two day course, students will become familiar with regenerative agriculture and the principles of soil health. Slides will be shown as we discuss these topics and two three-minute videos will also be played in class. Students will be hands on to apply what we learn by building a mini compost bin. Please see the course schedule in the “syllabus” section below. Lab materials are listed in the “supply list” section.
Learning Goals
Students will become familiar with regenerative agriculture.
Students will recognize the 5 principles of soil health.
Syllabus
2 Lessons
over 1 WeekLesson 1:
Day 1
Students will be re-introduced to soil from a microbiological point of view. Students will become familiar with carbon and understand its importance. We will define Earth's systems, past and present by creating a diagram through zoom. Students will investigate carbon cycling in plants. Students will get an up-close look at carbon sequestration as we learn about compost and how it can improve soil health. Students will follow along with me step by step as we build a mini compost bin.

Lesson 2:
Day 2
Students will explore regenerative agriculture and its 5 basic principles. We will compare and contrast soil building and soil depleting practices and examine which ones can improve food, feed soil, and benefit human health. We will end the course by pinpointing ways we can apply what we've learned to our daily lives.
