Class Experience
Socratic debate combines the benefits of standard debate with the added benefits of the Socratic method -- the use of leading, critical-thinking questions to move one's opponent or conversation partner into a new way of thinking. Many important professions require or benefit from the ability to competently ask questions, including attorney, journalist, and teacher or professor. As a former family law and criminal law attorney, I used questioning extensively. Also, prior to that, as a law student, I formally studied the use of questioning.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
A letter grade or informal assessment will be available if requested by a parent before the beginning of class. To receive a grade, students must participate in a live debate session.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
