Class Experience

In this class, students will get the opportunity to meet and interact with other similar peers. Specific goals that will be targeted are conversation skills (the steps of a conversation, how to maintain & continue a conversation, reciprocal communication). This will be taught through interactive lessons where students will be encouraged to practice specific skills with other peers in the group. These specific skills include initiating and continuing a conversation; which will be practiced by completing various activities and playing games together.
We will often start class with an interactive introduction game (e.g. action name game where each participant takes a turn doing an action while saying their name and everyone else follows the action along with repeating their name), followed by a mini lesson on specific conversation skills. The resources that will be used for this lesson will be signs that indicate the steps of a conversation and each sign will be held up along with a discussion about it (e.g. what does a greeting mean, what is an example of a greeting). Throughout the lesson, students will be able to engage and participate to practice skills. Towards the end, we will play a game together to once again practice the newly learnt skills and develop friendships. (Games will include online board games, online Boom learning cards- these will be screen shared during the activity).
No prior knowledge of conversation skills is required- this will be taught in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have volunteered and worked with children and teens diagnosed with Autism and other social pragmatic delays for over 7 years where I have been able to acquire a thorough understanding on how to interact with them and help them improve on a wide range of skills. These invaluable experiences have given me greater insight into teaching a huge variety of social and language skills (e.g. emotional recognition & regulation, problem-solving, appropriate vs. inappropriate, pronouns, prepositions, perspective-taking). I have been able to witness first-hand the amazing results from specific teaching methods and activities to improve students' social and language skills.
