6 in-class hoursHomework
1 hour per week. There are weekly worksheets and assignments each week. The worksheets are optional but highly recommended. The assignment of practicing social skills is not optional and I will be looking for a 'story' each week to make sure the student understands the social skills.Assessment
We will go over how your student has instituted their skills every week while practicing outside of class time in class or by sending their 'stories' in via messages.Class Experience
Each student will learn the 50 important social skills that are important in life and out in the real world. Some of the skills we will learn are: asking for help, being a good winner and loser, How to not interrupt in conversations, etc. We will also discuss how to put these skills in practice in school environments/real life situations and also how to act when you go out into the world at many different locations. There is no background knowledge required for this class. I will be teaching all of the students from 'step 1'. Homework is to practice what we have learned in the class during the week and apply the skills to a real life situation, with your family or friends. For example you go to a library with your mom or caregiver, how should you act while there? Learner progress will be evaluated by either the parent/guardian of the student writing on the classroom board/messages to me with the student stories or worksheets or sharing a story every week with me about how the student used the social skills in a visited location or with a group of other peers or people. I will understand that the student is learning based on these stories and how well the child instituted these new or previously known skills. Our class schedule is as follows: Week 1: Introduction to our class, welcome and introduce yourself and tell me about yourself. Week 2: Social skills 1-5, real life assignments, Week 3: Social skills 6-11, assignment, Week 4: Social skills 12-20, assignment, Week 5: Social skills 20-30, assignment, Week 6: Social skills 30-40, assignment, Week 7: Social skills 40-45, assignment Week 8: Final week of social skills 45-50, wrapping up, final test and going over all we learned.
Learning Goals
Students will go over social skills in a polite slow paced environment.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
There is none, except brief mentions of when we don't have social skills or they are incorrect that there can be bad habits formed from them. But I do not go into those habits. I also talk about how there may be bad people in the world and you have to be careful with certain social skills. None, I provide all worksheets and power point slide shows.
Supply List
I will be providing all lessons via power point presentations, so you will not need to purchase anything for this class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am offering this class, as I have a child with ASD and I have always taught him how to act in the real world. We have not relied on therapists because the therapists generally want to teach your child how to be different and not always in good way. I have always taught my son that you should be honest with your feelings and actions. Being different in thinking is NOT a bad thing for anyone including a child. I have taught my son for 8 years so far(this is how old he is) and will continue to do so. I want every child to be honest and not feel that they need to 'fit in' I am giving you the skills to work with others and be friends with others, but you never have to 'fit in' in my room:)
