This weekly group will meet to work on social skills. This course will teach children how to read social cues, greet, initiate/maintain conversations, identify expected/unexpected behaviors, make friends, and so much more over multiple weeks. Class time will include direct instruction of social skills, interactive opportunities, guided practice, and more independent practice. Extensive research shows that social skills instruction is effective in reducing a child's experience of school failure or rejection as well as the aggressiveness and isolation that often develop because of problems relating to others. Please note that this is a group/class and is NOT therapy.
Learning Goals
Students will learn various social communication skills, such as:
-verbal/nonverbal social cues (e.g., facial expressions, body language)
-expected versus unexpected behaviors in various situations
-making friends/identifying if someone is your friend
-personal space
-appropriate eye contact
-greetings
-initiating/maintaining a conversation
-turn-taking
-conflict resolution
-compliments
