Description

Class Experience

Learners will talk with the instructor and at least one peer about their topics of interest of their own choosing. After everyone has shared their interests, each student will share information about the other learners. The instructor will converse with all the students and verbally guide them with modeling and verbal reminders. The class time will be fun and they will even meet Toby, the pirate dog to add to the fun. Learners will be guided in using the following skills:

Share information with others, taking turns
Observe others' body language
Observe others' emotions
Share the observed information

This instructor is a specialist in autism, and has worked with students with social skill deficits for 32 years. Ms. Debbi has a granddaughter with autism from whom she has learned so much. The instructor has had extensive training in Social Learning Theory based on Michelle Garcia Winner's work.

No homework or projects

Learners may want to bring items or books representing their interests and share information about the items.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Informal assessment based on observation and notes

1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

Learners who prefer to communicate by using the chat feature rather than speaking are welcome!

Curriculum is based on Michelle Garcia Winner' Think Social! A Social Thinking Curriculum for School-Age Students. We play Kahoot! and Houseparty for socialization.
