Class Experience

Welcome to the world of social media!

It is a powerful tool, when used correctly, and it's something that students should know how to safely navigate.

This class is designed to be welcoming and non-intimidating so that all students feel comfortable asking questions!

Here is a breakdown of what you can expect:

Day One: The rules of social media. We will start day one with a pretest to see where students are in their understanding of social media safety. This does not need to be shared with the class, everything is confidential. Students will learn the rules that are required to keep themselves safe. This includes not sharing private information, location, and some red flags they need to be aware of. We will work together as a class to determine if certain posts are safe or not, and most importantly, students will have to decide why they are not safe.

Day Two: This class students will be able to put the previous week's lesson to the test. Together we will look at social media posts and determine if they are safe, and if they are not, we will fix them.

Day Three: Someone sends you a message...what do you do? We will look at specific examples of the types of people that might message or request to follow you. Students will work together to decide who is safe and who is not. We will also discuss when you need to tell an adult someone has messaged you (the difference between an acquaintance and a complete stranger)

Day Four: Cyber Bullying - what is it? What is harassment, what are threats, who are active participants, who are inactive bystanders? This class will discuss the different types of cyber and text bullying and how to appropriately handle those situations. Then, the fun part! Students get to design their own social media posts on paper. I will give them scenarios that I would like them to share and they will have to determine what is safe and what is not. They will wrap up the class with a post test to self-assess what they've learned.

*Students will be looking at pictures of posts, they will not be on any social media sites and will not need logins.
* Although the focus of this class is social media, we will also discuss texting.

Parental Guidance
Parents, please be aware that although this class provides safety information for your students, you should continue to monitor their social media as they apply these skills to their life. Throughout the class I will reassure students that their parents or guardians are their allies and that when in doubt, talk it out! This should open up lines of communication!
Supply List
On day 4 students will create their own social media posts. I will provide a templet to print or they can use a blank piece of paper.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello families! I’m Amanda and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach your learner! I love everything about education and feel consider being a teacher as part of who I am. It is my passion!

I have a bachelor's degree in elementary and special education, two active teaching licenses in Arizona and reading and ESL endorsements. I've been teaching since 2017 and I'm working towards a master's in child and adolescent development.

My goal as your learner’s teacher is to inspire them to be lifelong learners. Learning is scary and requires a lot of vulnerability to take chances knowing you could make a mistake. I pride myself on helping students feel safe, confident, and secure in themselves. I’ve always seen tremendous growth in students when they are in an environment that allows for them to safely make mistakes and learn from them.

I’m looking forward to meeting your learner and joining them in their educational journey!
