Class Experience

Welcome to our transformative course focused on Social Media & Building Healthy Habits for teens seeking to navigate the complex world of social media, online interactions, and digital literacy. In today's interconnected world, understanding the dynamics of digital citizenship is important. In this class we will talk about:

Digital Citizenship: What it means to be a citizen of the internet. Discover the importance of responsible online behavior and etiquettes, and the impact of one's digital footprint on their personal and future professional life.

Literacy & Critical Thinking: Explore strategies to evaluate and critically analyze information encountered online and things like self comparison and self sabotage, and the importance that not everything we see online is what is reality.

Healthy Habits & Boundaries: We'll talk about the importance of balance between online and offline activities. Learn to establish healthy boundaries and create a 'Digital Detox Plan' to foster a healthier relationship with technology.

Building a Positive Online Presence: Understand the power of maintaining a positive digital footprint.

In this masterclass, students will engage in discussions, activities, and exercises to help support their experience on social media, have better online interactions, and feel prepared to enter the digital landscape with full knowledge of the complexity of social media. By the session's end, they will gain tools to become responsible digital citizens, equipped with knowledge and strategies to navigate the digital landscape. Additionally, homework assignments will encourage personal reflection, enabling students to implement and refine the concepts discussed in the course. Join us as we embark on a journey to develop a healthier, more balanced relationship with the digital world. We will have a discussion about the benefits of social media as well as the drawbacks. This course will talk about healthy habits, creating boundaries, and making the nature of one's experience on social media more positive.

I’ve found that if you just ask young people to stop using social media, you’re making them feel like you are trying to control aspects of their life. However, teaching them about the negative consequences is useful because nobody likes to be manipulated, and if you can help teach youth about how social media can manipulate them, they will be more inclined to regulate their use on their own.
Learning Goals
Students will become aware of the negative consequences of social media, how to be safe online, the benefits of social media, and how to set boundaries to promote those positive aspects while eliminating the bad. We will also go over good habits to build around social media.

Teacher expertise and credentials
As an Communications Specialist with a Bachelor's degree in Communications and PR, I bring a wealth of expertise in communications and social media to the classroom. My unique perspective is enriched by my research projects, where I explored the profound implications of social media on teen mental health and democracy. As someone who also grew up in the era of social media, I have a personal connection to the challenges young people face while navigating the digital world. I understand the complexities, both personally and professionally, and I have a deep-rooted commitment to helping young individuals develop the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in this online environment.

What sets me apart is — not only my academic and professional qualifications — but also my personal journey. At the age of 16, I took a bold step and deleted my social media accounts, embarking on a two-year journey of a social media fast and became a digital wellness advocate. During this time, I honed critical skills and habits that enabled me to cultivate a healthier and more mindful relationship with the internet. My experiences, combined with my educational background, have uniquely positioned me to guide and empower young people in building healthy online habits, fostering critical digital literacy, and promoting responsible digital citizenship. I'm passionate about sharing my insights and assisting the next generation in navigating the online world effectively.
