Class Experience

This course is a beginning workshop in Documentary production. Our production efforts will be guided by a chosen social justice initiative like Indigenous Peoples Movement, Black Lives Matter, Amazon Watch, etc. We will practice crafting engaging short films that educate others about a given social justice issue or initiative. Each week students will move through the stages of production. We will cover story structure, sound recording, and video editing. Students will produce one short film in this course.

Week 1:Lecture/class meeting -Activity - Choose an initiative/Research/Write

Week 2:Lecture/class meeting - Activity - Record audio/gather or shoot B-roll

Week 3:Lecture/class meeting - Activity -Post production editing/finish/export

Week 4: Movie showcase. During this class meeting students will share and discuss their completed films.

Instruction will take place through synchronous class meetings as well as posted lectures and assignments. Each week students can participate in a class discussion as well as submit the weekly activity to the Outschool classroom for feedback.

Learners will choose their own topic guided by both academic and popular media. Each avenue of research will be different contingent upon the topic chosen. The goal of this short production is to provide the learner with an opportunity to become acquainted with contemporary movements in Social justice, translate that exploration into questions for discussion, then turn that discussion into something that can be shared with others.

Final film is due at the end of week 3.

I will post a compilation (showcase) of all completed films at the completion of our course.

Video production requires that we stick to our deadlines. Often in production it is more important to complete the project and move forward than it is to attempt perfection. In a summer workshop putting forth a strong effort and completing the work is most important for growth and learning.
