This will be an on-going class that will meet once a week for specially-abled teenagers to meet and socialize. This class will enable the specially-abled teenagers to also work on their communication skills. The class will open with introductions. Students are welcome to bring a beverage to class for this is a social hour. Depending on the needs of the individual learners, music may be played by the teacher at a very low level during the social hour or students can take turns sharing a song that they particularly like with the group. Students can also suggest music that they might like once we are in the group for the following social hour. Students will learn how to introduce themselves to new people. Students will learn about physical cues and body language in individual conversations and within groups. Students will learn how to " read a room' or rather how to feel out the energy and communications of what is going on around them. As the on-going classes progress, students will be able to utilize the break-out rooms with new friends of their choice to practice individual socialization and then come back to the whole group for discussion. With myself as facilitator, hostess, and teacher, the students can address any concerns or issues they need help with insofar as social problems or advice. The learners can also seek guidance or advice from their own peers. I will help the flow of the room so that the learners are able to get to know one another more fully with a goal to create new friendships as they all strengthen new social skills and become more confident in the areas that they may feel a bit insecure. In the areas that they feel confident, they will most definitely serve as peer support to others within the group and vice versa. Most importantly I wish for this social hour to be FUN! With each on-going class, I will ask for the input of the learners for different activities, games, or a theme they would wish to have within the group. Their input is most important to me. I will look to them to help lead the way. I encourage communication from the parents if you have any questions, feedback, or concerns along the way. I look forward to meeting your special teen. Kind regards, Dana Stinson Cumby M.A.
