Class Experience

In this class, students will meet and connect with their peers in an atmosphere that is safe, relaxed, and supportive. Each class will begin with introductions and a short lecture on a topic such as:

May 31: Introductions; What is Shyness?
June 7: What Stress is and How to Manage it
June 14: Self-Confidence
June 21: Positive Self-Talk

Those who are comfortable may share their experiences, ideas, or opinions; the other members of our group will listen and thoughtfully respond if they wish. I will encourage and support dialogue that is open, honest, and beneficial to the group.

Prompts will then be offered to get a conversation started. Topics may include: movies they've seen recently, favorite video games, best summer vacation, etc. The goal is for students to share, gain insight, and be supported by one another. I will encourage an interactive discussion, but no one is required to speak or respond.

This social group is for girls who are shy or reluctant to speak out in groups. As this is a "safe space", students may speak as little or as much as they wish. I will pose questions such as: "Would anyone like to add to this discussion?" or "Does anyone else have a comment or question?", so there is no pressure or expectation to contribute to the discussion. I want the members of this group to ultimately establish a sense of community with other students who share similar struggles while learning some life skills.

As this is an inclusive class, all teen girls are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know. This group is offered to girls aged 11-14 years and 15-18 years as well.

**PLEASE NOTE: I also offer private tutoring for girls who are shy or may struggle in social situations in one-on-one meetings. This is ideal for students who are not comfortable in a "group" setting or wish to get acclimated before joining the group. We will identify and discuss social skills, such as stress management, meeting people, and positive self-talk. Please contact me for more information.

I am a former therapist who has worked with children, adolescents, and teenagers in individual and group therapy settings. I began my mental health career employed with a psychiatric hospital before I left to counsel children and their families in a nonprofit community-based program. I then became the on-site Director of an Independent Living Program which assisted teenagers and young adults transitioning into independence. Along with counseling, we provided training for healthy coping skills and life skills. As someone who has struggled with shyness and feeling awkward in social situations since childhood, I can relate to others who find social situations stressful or attempt to avoid approaching new people or situations. I also understand the importance of a sense of community and connecting with peers who can empathize with your struggles.
