Class Experience

Welcome to this dynamic and interactive class designed to empower learners! In this student-driven, ongoing session, we'll immerse ourselves in lively discussions centered around our favorite topics, including music, gaming, books, art, TV shows, and more. Participants will take turns sharing thoughts, engaging with peers, and forging new friendships. I will use your learner's interests to create games played in class, such as Would You Rather, Trivia, Guess the Gibberish, memory games and more! This class provides a relaxed environment where students can freely express themselves in a safe and enjoyable space. If individuals prefer discussing specific topics over playing games, that's perfectly fine too! The primary focus here is on fostering social interaction and strengthening our social skills.

This class is particularly beneficial for students seeking additional support in communication and self-expression. With a smaller class size, participants will receive extra assistance, guidance, and prompts as needed. It's essential for students to be able to articulate their thoughts during class to actively participate. While I'll offer additional support, the ability to provide explanations and respond to questions with feedback is crucial. If your student requires extra support or assistance, please reach out to me before the class so I can accommodate accordingly and make sure my classes are a good fit. The aim of this class is to encourage students to converse casually with each other, with prompts and guidance gradually diminishing as the class progresses, facilitating the development of friendships and conversational skills.

Our class will commence with brief introductions, followed by a current event ice breaker to help students connect. We'll then dive into our discussions and games, practicing prompting with questions, exploring interesting subjects, and engaging in back-and-forth verbal communication. Additionally, students will be taught how to approach opinions they may not agree with and how to navigate such situations tactfully. We'll delve into the importance of setting goals and discuss effective strategies for achieving them.

It's important to note that this class is a social club, intended for individuals seeking a social environment rather than a foundational course for those requiring more extensive social skills training. Thank you for your understanding.

Learning Goals
My learning goals for your student:

-Social/Emotional Development (helping with the ability to adjust to new settings, learning respect for themselves and others, following simple rules and directions, and helping recognize the feelings of others)

-Cognitive Development (observes and participates in discussions, understands cause and effects, applies knowledge learned to a new situation)

-Language Development (expresses themselves, comprehends conversations and participates back, answers and asks questions)

My goal is to allow students to have a comfortable, social learning environment where they can practice their social skills with their peers and learn from others while talking about their favorite topics. This class will help build your student’s overall confidence when engaging with others!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught my homeschooled children for over 10 years, from elementary age through high school academic subjects/curriculum. I have a background teaching autistic children, those with ADHD, developmental and intellectual disabilities, social anxiety, mental disorders, and physical disabilities for 10 years. I create curriculum and plan lessons around my student’s specific academic needs. Each child learns differently and at their own pace. It takes a dedicated teacher to pinpoint what type of learner a student is (visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or logical). By learning what different styles my students learned best in, I created a unique lesson plan that helped them reach their full potential.

I have over 20 years of experience working directly with youth in my community. I have volunteered for over 8 years with the special needs community and am currently involved with several groups in my area. As a current Certified Coach with the Special Olympics organization, I help student-athletes, ages 8 and above, reach their full potential on and off the field. I teach them to correctly verbalize their frustrations, communicate productively with teammates, develop lasting friendships, and self-advocate. These actions help the athletes have overall better sportsmanship and be a better teammate.

I am currently studying Child Psychology, which gives me better insight into developing minds.I have a great passion for helping students with their socio-emotional needs.
