I have over twenty years of experience teaching rhetoric writing, reading, language arts, and critical thinking skills. I am familiar with the material, and have the experience to foster meaningful learning. I have taught English and Language Arts for many years at the high school level. My experience includes teaching history as well as social studies, as these topics often go hand in hand with literature, writing, and humanities. I have a degree in English Teaching, and I enjoy teaching students how to explore historical events through written material. As an English teacher, I have taught students to read and critically analyze differentiating opinions about non-fictional topics and arrive at a substantiated belief. In addition, I have taught in a team taught, multidisciplinary Language Arts/History class at the secondary school level. I have worked extensively as an educator with immigrants and refugees, and I understand the high level of sensitivity that is required to facilitate meaningful learning with respect to the experiences and struggles that marginalized populations have faced. Topics and articles that deal with the topic of racism will be monitored carefully by me. My expectations regarding comments and discussion are made clear to the students: racist comments and hate speech are not allowed.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The topics covered in this course are about historical revolutions and movements, and the social climates surrounding them. I will facilitate a diplomatic discourse with the students with respect to all topics. Opinions may be expressed by students regarding social, political, and historically controversial topics. I will ensure that any dialogue is productive.
