Welcome to Social Book Club With Ms. B

In this Social Multi-day book club, students will read the original Flat Stanley and be taken on an adventure to California. The original Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown is a great read for students who might be reluctant at reading or for readers who would love to finish a book in just 5 days! Flat Stanley is 65 pages long with only five chapters. Each chapter is broken down in class with connection activities to further understanding.

Students are encouraged to participate in conversation with peers and teacher as we make predictions for the next chapter. At the end of the last class students will send their Flat Stanley to someone in the mail. Readers can read as an E-Reader, check out from the library or purchase and add to their book collection. During each meeting we will read the book together in class. Each class students will have the opportunity to read each chapter outloud.

Monday:
Students will read Chapter 1 in class as a group taking turns reading paragraphs. If students would rather listen and follow along with group that is also okay. As a class we will work on our connection’s activity, evidence from the text/questions for each chapter. Students will also have a one-page handout that is the cover page for our printable that we will work on in class. We will work on as a class a one-page handout, Story Elements. (Title and Author, Setting, Main Characters)

Tuesday:
Students will read Chapter 2 in class taking turns reading paragraphs. If students would rather listen and follow along with group that is also okay. We will work on as a class a one-page handout, Character Traits, Stanley and Arthur.

Wednesday:
Students will read Chapter 3 in class taking turns reading paragraphs. If students would rather listen and follow along with group that is also okay. We will work on as a class a one-page handout, Character Traits, Stanley and Arthur. Can You Picture It? Visualize a picture in your mind about the story and draw it.

Thursday:
Students will read Chapter 4 in class taking turns reading paragraphs. If students would rather listen and follow along with group that is also okay. We will work on as a class a one-page handout, What If? What if you were flat like Stanley? Tell about things you could do if you were flat. As a class we will work on a template of Stanley.

Friday:
Students will read Chapter 5 in class taking turns reading paragraphs. If students would rather listen and follow along with group that is also okay. Students will work on a one-page handout, Story Clues, Things that Stanley could do when he was flat. Students will also have a Word Search Handout to print and begin in class, what we do not complete in class students are encouraged to complete outside of class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Brienna. Students can call me Ms. B.
When the pandemic started, I knew right away that homeschooling was the journey our family would be taking. I have been homeschooling along with teaching. I began teaching when I was 18! I fell in love with teaching and showing students that they were Rockstars! (Reading Rockstar, Math Rockstar, Social Studies Rock Star). It was very important to me that learners felt that they were awesome and could rock any subject that was taught.

I have two amazing kids!! A Jr. in high school and a middle school learner. Our favorite things to do as a family is to travel and collect board games.

I am a huge advocate for special needs students. My son’s journey with Autism and ADHD taught me so much from learning about different therapies to IEP goals. I create classes so that all children with different abilities can participate and feel valued.

With my ten years’ experience, as a preschool teacher my passion is teaching children through engaging activities, while having fun. Prior to becoming a teacher, I was a private tutor for Kindergarten through 6th grade.

Currently I am working towards my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and becoming a certified Curriculum Specialist. With different classroom setting experiences I had the opportunity to focus on phonics, reading, sensory activities, science experience and history. Getting children excited about learning is what drives me every day.
I cannot wait to teach your children here at Outschool!
