Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
There is something very special about the legendary unicorn that fascinates us. Whether it’s their beauty, pure heart, or magical nature, stories and myths about unicorns are found throughout the centuries.
In this one time class, we will take a look at some of the ‘facts’ about unicorns; where the belief in their existence may have come from, their place in stories and legends and meet their close cousin, the alicorn.

Learners will use what they learn about the nature of a unicorn to invent their own unicorn (or perhaps an alicorn). We will name our creation and imagine some details about them; where they live, what their magical powers might be, and will describe their animal’s appearance, character and any other details about their background. Learners will use the sheet included with this class to plan their unicorn’s details and to colour their unicorn on the template provided on the printout.
Learners will have a few minutes to share their creations.

We’ll briefly discuss planning a story before moving into writing time.
During writing time, learners can decide to:
Plan their story to write afterwards.
Write a brief plan and begin their story.
Go straight into writing their story.

Time permitting, students may share their plans/ stories, although there is no pressure to do so.
If they wish, students may upload their stories to the classroom afterwards.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I've almost 20 years’ experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills.
I’ve also had a keen interest in mythology since childhood and have studied both for leisure and also for use in the classroom, where we have explored myths and legends in many forms.
