Class experience
This is a class for students who love writing fiction, and especially for those who have ambitions of becoming professional writers. As a professional author, editor, and English teacher, I approach writing instruction with multiple sources of knowledge about how to write engaging fiction. We will focus on short story and novel writing. Students will work individually and together to outline, draft, and edit their own works. Each week we alternate between either (1) a lesson on a specific aspect of writing or (2) a feedback day in which students can share what they've written to get useful feedback from the other students and from me, a professional editor. Lessons will vary based on student needs but will cover: outlining, drafting, revising, active voice, imagery, "show; don't tell," vivid verbs, specific language, sentence variation, character development, plot development, setting description and theme.
