This class is specifically designed by a school principal to explore the teaching profession for high school students considering majoring in education. After 4 years of college, what is a principal looking for when hiring a teacher? Topics that will be addressed include pros and cons of teaching, typical certification areas, salary and benefits included in the pay, how to prepare now as a high school student, and teacher evaluation. This class is taught in English.
Students will gain insight into the teaching career--from classroom responsibilities to financial considerations (salaries, benefits, etc). Students will also learn ways they can prepare now, as high school students, for a successful career in this rewarding profession. The goal of the class is to prepare students to be realistic about the profession so that they have the best chance of a happy, long-term career.
24 years experience as a public school teacher and administrator (principal), responsible for hiring teachers: Elementary Education--certified (with preschool, elementary, and middle school teaching experience) Preschool Special Education--certified Gifted and Talented Endorsement Reading Endorsement Education Administration (M.Ed. and Ed.D.)
No outside work is required, but I am happy to answer additional questions through my Outschool email!
The class outline will be presented through Google Slides as students engage in conversation and question/answer throughout the session.
As an Exit Ticket, the learner will complete a Google Form at the end of class to ask questions that can be addressed in future class sessions.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
