Equip your child with creative storytelling skills and critical thinking through this "Dungeon Mastering (DMing/GMing) 101" class, empowering young adventurers aged 10-15 to become the guides for their own tabletop role-playing games.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
I have been a Dungeons and Dragons gamemaster for many years, both for adults and for children. I love creating unique scenarios that are not only fun but which challenge students in their ability to problem-solve and work together as a team. I also was a Senior Teacher at an edtech start-up that emphasized problem-solving and collaboration using gamified curriculum.
Homework Offered
Homework and Projects: Homework assignments are designed to reinforce the concepts learned each week. Learners will have a mix of individual and group projects that encourage practical application of Dungeon Mastering techniques. These projects will range from creating puzzles and designing NPCs to crafting story elements and encounter scenarios. Individual vs. Group Work: While some assignments are individual, I also believe in the power of collaborative learning. A portion of the assignments will be group projects, allowing learners to engage with their peers, share ideas, and learn from one another's creative approaches. Time Commitment: Homework time commitment varies depending on the complexity of the assignment and individual learning styles. On average, learners can expect to spend around 1 hour per week on homework, which includes reading, project work, and preparing for in-class discussions. Reading Expectations: For classes requiring reading, learners can anticipate reading approximately 10 to 15 pages per week. The readings are designed to complement the topics covered in class and provide additional context and insights to enhance your Dungeon Mastering skills. The aim is to strike a balance between individual exploration and collaborative learning, allowing you to dive deep into the world of Dungeon Mastering while benefiting from the diverse perspectives of your peers.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learner progress will be assessed by a session that they will create and lead.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Dungeons and Dragons is an open-world scenario in which students may choose to battle, avoid, or even befriend monsters. If there is any concern about this, please reach out to me and I will be happy to accommodate any concerns regarding this (e.g., instead of monsters, students will only have to problem-solve in non-combat scenarios.)

At the beginning of every session, I remind players to privately message me "PAUSE", if they ever feel uncomfortable by anything so that I can swiftly divert the topic.

We will be using several third-party tools to make the experience more immersive and smoother for all, but none of these require account creation. There is an option on both of the websites for the student to change their display name, but this is optional, and they can use their character's name or a pseudonym, if they don't wish to use their first name. The third-party tools are

1) www.dnd.wizards.com. This is an approved Outschool resource which allows students to view and edit their characters, as well as look up rules
2) www.owlbear.app. This is a virtual tabletop which allows me to share maps with the students, to make the gameplay more immersive. No account creation is required. Changing one's display name is optional. There is no option to chat.
4) Google Docs
