Would you buy a TV without knowing it’s main features? Would you buy a book without reading its description or reviews? Of course not! However, most freshman college students in mechanical engineering lack a basic understanding of what they will gain with their education. This may sound crazy, but it’s true! In this class you will get a solid preview of the main courses that make up the mechanical engineering degree program. With PowerPoint lecture and discussions, this two-day Outschool course will preview the below college courses and give examples of how what is taught in the courses is used by working engineers. To help make the topics intuitive and easy to follow, the courses are grouped together by general subject areas (general degree requirements, forces, what forces do to things, harnessing natural phenomena, and solving problems with what you know). Day 1: General degree requirements • Basic courses • Mathematics • Science • Intro to engineering • Computer programming Forces • Statics • Dynamics What forces do to things • Solid mechanics / mechanics of materials • Fluid mechanics • FEA and CFD • Vibrations Day 2: Harnessing natural phenomena • Thermodynamics • Heat transfer • Material science • Circuits • Controls Solving problems with what you know • Machine design • Mechatronics / robotics • Design clinic / capstone design project • Engineering economics After the first day, students will be asked to send in a degree program from their university of choice. These will be briefly reviewed and discussed at the end of the second day of class (a couple minutes for each student’s degree program). The only prerequisite is a general interest in engineering.
Learning Goals
Students will leave the class with a general understanding of what they could learn as a mechanical engineering student at a university. This will give them confidence and a better understanding of where they are going if they choose this college degree path, or cause them to find another degree that is better suited to their interests.
