So You Wanna Be a Teacher?: The Class for Children Who Love to Be the Teacher
What's included
2 live meetings
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
This class is made for children who love to "be the teacher" in their relationships or in their pretend play. DAY 1: We will engage in discussion about our favorite teachers, the role of teachers, and why each learner would like to be a teacher. Learners will be guided into thinking about what subject area they feel most interested in or passionate about. Our discussion will help them narrow down their focus to a specific content or skill they would most enjoy teaching to others. The provided graphic organizer will be used as a brainstorming guide. Learners will draw themselves as a teacher, draw their favorite subject, their favorite content or skill that they think they would like to teach, and finally, write a learning goal for their own "students". Sometime between Day 1 and Day 2, learners will need to send me their brief lesson that they plan to "teach" to the class on Day 2. Learners can send this through the message feature on Outschool. This mini-lesson idea will be approved by the teacher, and the student will receive a response. DAY 2: After a brief introduction, learners will each be given 5 minutes to "teach" the class! Students can use props they have to enhance their mini-lesson. Each new "teacher" will be celebrated and receive feedback on their mini-lesson after class. *This class is by request only. Please request a time that works best for your learner, and I will be in touch. Thank you!*
Learning Goals
DAY 1: Students will learn both great responsibility and great joy of being a teacher! They will leave class with a lesson idea and learning goal in mind for their future "students".
DAY 2: Students will be able to "teach" a mini-lesson of their own creation to the rest of the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Beth Govier and I cannot wait to be your Outschool teacher. I have been working as an online instructor for four consecutive years after leaving my career as a 4th grade classroom teacher in my local public school system. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and a lifetime teaching certificate for Elementary Education (grades K-6) from the state of Missouri. In total, I have eleven years of experience teaching children in formal classroom settings, both online and in the public school system.
I love learning, and can be found regularly reading, listening to podcasts, or taking classes myself. Because of this, I have a passion for instilling a love of learning in children through various mediums (play, mentor texts, good literature, the lives of others, etc), and a passion for teaching to the heart of my students.
My teaching style is one of high-energy and high interaction with the students. I love getting students engaged with creative play and critical thinking. I focus on letting students learn on their own, while supporting individual thought with corrections where needed. I love getting to watch my students form their own thoughts and share their opinions in the learning opportunity!
I am excited to have you considering one of my classes. If you don't see sections scheduled for the class you are interested in, please send me a request. I am more than happy to make accommodations.
I hope to see you soon!
-Teacher Beth

Class Policies:
1) I aim to keep classes close to the scheduled amount of time, however, classes with low enrollments or especially talkative students may run a few minutes under or a few minutes over.
2) If a class does not meet the minimum enrollment requirements, I will contact the parent/guardian and learners to confirm they want to continue class 24 hours before class is scheduled to begin.
3) Classes will begin at the scheduled time, even if all learners are not in the classroom (unless there appears to be a technical issue). I will not be in contact with absent learners during class time so I can focus on the learners who are present. I will respond to any parent or learner messages after class is completed.
4) If no learners are in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes before exiting the classroom.
5) I enjoy keeping all learners unmuted to encourage free participation. However, learners may be muted at various times throughout the lesson in the case of distracting or awkward background noises. I desire for all learners to get to share and speak, but may need to mute for the overall benefit of the class.
