Class Experience
In this private one-on-one class for young learners who love to sing, we will: (1) build a repertoire of favorite songs that learner chooses and songs that I may recommend; (2) exercise various muscles involved in speaking and singing, including the eyes; (3) learn some basic musicianship skills; and (4) learn some easy performance skills. No prior experience is necessary -- just a curiosity for trying new things, a willingness to make mistakes, and a love for singing. In general, we will spend most of the time building repertoire and learning parent-approved songs that learner really enjoys singing. As the 6-8 age group can differ widely in their physical and mental development, and even on a day-to-day basis, I will adjust the lessons accordingly to be more musicianship-based, technique-based or performance-based depending on the learner's personality and learner's goals. We will learn primarily through imitation and repetition. As children tend to enjoy repetition, we may spend several lessons on the same song, which I will use to build thinker skills (e.g., rhythm, solfege, pitch matching, sight reading), doer skills (e.g., muscle coordination involving breath, articulation, and range), and feeler skills (e.g., expressive movements, style, groove). We will combine these skills to develop connection with an audience and to build confidence when performing. Before each class, please let me know what songs you would like to sing. Please have a second device to play accompaniment tracks. If you would like me to choose a song, please be prepared to occasionally purchase digital sheet music (~$6.00) from Musicnotes at the website www.musicnotes.com. They have a wonderful selection of songs and audition cuts that are very useful for learning purposes, especially for online and self learning. (There is also a Musicnotes Pro account available for additional discounts.) After purchase, download the Musicnotes Player App on a second device. You can use the App to play only the melody or only the piano. You can also change the tempos. For class, please have the Musicnotes Player ready to sing along with. Please contact me if there are any questions. Please refer to Supply List for additional information. Please note that, in my experience, the 6-8 year-old learners who seem to thrive in this weekly ongoing class are children who love to sing all day long and seem to never have a shortage of songs that they are listening to or wanting to learn. If the child does not have a clear goal of wanting to perfect old songs or learn new songs each week, the child will most likely get bored with lessons, which is very normal and not indicative of singing ability. The child may instead thrive in a social group class or performance class, choir, or school/community musical. If you are unsure about enrolling in weekly lessons, please consider a one-time lesson or consultation (request a time that works for you): https://outschool.com/classes/one-time-private-singing-class-or-consultation-zpj5Eram#usKVbED4EG Another option is to try weekly lessons for about 4 weeks and then take intermittent lessons until your child is older and ready for more formal or professional training. I also welcome parental involvement and even participation in the class so that parents can help their children practice throughout the week.

Song choices will be screened prior to class for Outschool's secular and age-appropriate content.
Supply List
The following supplies are not mandatory, but will be helpful if they are readily available: (1) post-its or colored tape or sticker to put on computer screen; (2) still life object that learner can easily focus eyes on (such as lamp, alarm clock, plant, teddy bear, etc.); and (3) something far away in the room to focus on (such as a painting or window). Also, for class, please be prepared to have a printout of the sheet music or a printout of the lyrics, a pencil to mark up the sheet music, and a second device to play accompaniment. Prior to class, please send me the name of the song, sheet music, or karaoke track that you would like to learn. If you need help choosing a song, please feel free to contact me before class begins. If you need help with accompaniment tracks, there are some wonderful resources such as YouTube, PianoTrax, The Accompanist, Musicnotes, or SheetMusicDirect. If you do not have a backing track, please reach out to me before class, and I will help you find a backing track. You are also welcome to sing along with the recording artist, but please check your volume so you will be louder than the recording artist.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am a professional vocal coach with 25+ years of experience as a private voice teacher, audition coach, music director, and piano accompanist. I am based in New York City where I spend most of my time helping young aspiring athletes and artists pursue their musical dreams of performing on Broadway. With the wonderful technology of Zoom, I hope to serve a wider range of young artists who may be interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts.
Although I work primarily with young professionals, I also hope to serve learners whose goals are not necessarily to sing professionally. I hope to instill some of the love and joy of singing that I had growing up without the pressure of grades, perfection, and judges. I am excited to meet new aspiring artists whose musical dreams may simply be to learn a new song, record a song for a family member, sing karaoke with friends, or jam out alone with Spotify.
I have tried to list different levels of classes to meet the needs of a variety of learners. If you would like a customized class, please do not hesitate to contact me.
