Snowflakes and A Disappearing Snowman (Reading and Science Experiment)
What's included
1 live meeting
45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
It's time to enjoy some winter fun in this one time class all about snow. Your child will become a snow expert as we explore the science of snow. We'll begin by activating our background knowledge about snow as students interact by sharing what they already know about snow. Next, your child will help our class brainstorm questions about what he/she wants to know about snow (such as How is snow made?) I will then share excerpts from the non-fiction books, The Story of Snow and Snowflake Bentley to share snow facts! Drawing on my teacher expertise, the class will be very interactive as I share the book to make sure your child is engaged in the class. Before we start our science activity, students will take turns sharing out 1 fun fact they learned about during our exploration of snow. Then the fun will begin as we use household ingredients (see supply list) to create our "snow." This will be a time for your child to have hands-on science time to create a homemade snow. Students will learn how to mix up their own batch of "snow" and will love building various snow creations to then share with the class. Note: some students may need help measuring/mixing, depending on your child's age and abilities. Time permitting or as they build with their snow, I'll also share the picture book, Snowmen at Night. By the end of this class, your child will have interacted with other learners to enhance their understanding of snow and engaged in our science snow experiment. The real magic will come when I make my snowman disappear at the end of our class! Your child will be encourage to make their snowman disappear too at the conclusion of our class! So don't miss out on this fun class--it's SNOW much fun!
Learning Goals
Students will engage with others to learn all about snow---facts will come from two books (see class description) to help in their understanding of the science behind snow.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
As an educator, librarian, and parent to 3 little ones, I always recommend parents preview the books used (see class description) to see if the text is appropriate for their individual child.
Supply List
Your child will need the following supplies: - medium size container/bowl - measuring spoons - measuring cups - water - 2 tablespoons of salt - 3 small boxes of baking soda/soda bicarbonate (16 oz/1 lb box) - liquid soap (hand soap or dish soap will work) Optional: small twigs snowman accessories (such as foam paper to make a hat or nose, small round objects for eyes, etc). Teacher expertise and credentials
Although my main focus of education has been the classroom setting and the library, I have experience as a Science STEM teacher for grades K - 5. This area of focus provides a wonderful platform to connect reading and science together to learn about the world around us. My enthusiastic and engaging teaching style allows for students to connect to not only the text but the science concepts through hands on exploration. Your child will be able to create "snow" during this class and will be something he/she can make even after the class. I love to making the learning experience real and relevant to your child's world and through science and literacy, I will be able to share about the many wonders of snow!
