Class Experience

Students will understand the fundamentals of poetry: content, form, stanzas, line breaks, and performance. Students will also have a portfolio of at least four polished poems to be able to see their growth from the first class. Students will also be able to make more poetry with these fundamentals, and build courage reading and discussing their poetry to a small audience.
I am a published written and spoken word poet. I have published two books of poetry, poetry published in over five magazine and literary journals, and mentor young poets. I am also studying creative writing at the university level, with 4.0 GPA in the major, and 3.76 GPA overall. I am also a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honors Society. Outside of this, I have worked with children in the non-profit sector for over 5 years, with a majority of my time dedicated to High School aged students over the last two years.
Students will be assigned to write, read, and revise their poetry as well as practice their pieces out loud after each class, preferably in a mirror or two a small audience (can be stuffed animals!). All homework is individual and should take at least 15 minutes.
All videos will be shown in class. Students should have a way to write their poetry and take notes––this might be a pen and paper or via an online platform like Google drive or Microsoft word. Students will need to send me their poems via classroom chat.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students can be assigned a letter grade if a parent requests, however, I would like them to focus on their poetry without any added pressure.
6 hours 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be watching videos of spoken word artists. While there will be no obscene content or profanity, many artists talk about their lives. In the videos I have chosen there is a mention of beauty standards, the joy of giving a child a word, the tension around math, and how hard it is to write. All of these are written and performed by children aged 10 to 14 and are uplifting in its conclusions.
