Snap Circuits | Bring Your Favorite Set Inventors Club
What's included
1 live meeting
25 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this social club, we discuss the workings of Snap Circuits. With the plethora of sets available, many learners requested times when they could show their new, advanced kit. Maybe it was a Christmas or birthday gift, or a set they got to supplement their joy of circuitry. Whatever the reason, this is the club to bring it to. We always have a warm greeting followed by free invention time. I make breaks for multiple show-and-tell times. This allows learners to develop both expression and listening skills. What's more, we troubleshoot and help each other if our circuitry doesn't behave as expected. I lead the group with demonstrations as we go. I often build circuits with common errors for us to discuss. I also show various modifications we can make. The concept of error trapping comes up repeatedly. This is a critical skill I learned later during laboratory work and I got really excited when I was able to help my children and their friends learn it through such fun "play" with Snap Circuits. In all, our schedule will proceed as follows: Week of Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022 • Greeting • Show our choice set of the day • Free invention time (I demonstrate common issues) • Show and tell 1 • Free invention time (I demonstrate possible modifications) • Show and tell 2 • "Happy inventing", sign off. Week of Sunday, Feb. 06, 2022 • Greeting • Show our choice set of the day • Free invention time (I demonstrate common issues) • Show and tell 1 • Free invention time (I demonstrate possible modifications) • Show and tell 2 • "Happy inventing", sign off. Week of Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 • Greeting • Show our choice set of the day • Free invention time (I demonstrate common issues) • Show and tell 1 • Free invention time (I demonstrate possible modifications) • Show and tell 2 • "Happy inventing", sign off. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Parents!
I hope to guide children like yours to a world of exploration. Let's face it. They are already curious and exploring. They just need an expert guide to help them place their ideas and questions in a learning context.
I am a research scientist by profession and training, and I have worked with youth in five countries (Canada, US, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, and Brazil) from seven different first language households (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Maya Q'eqchi', Maya Mopan, and Yoremnokki).
Topics I focus on include STEM, inventing classes, and social-emotional awareness classes.
My best teachers and professors incorporated lessons of self-discovery, and I offer that same joy of learning to your children. When children share their curiosity with other interested children they gain a great sense of self-esteem. Additionally, show-and-tell of a treasured toy or a creative invention helps build up confidence as well as make for really fun class sessions!
See you in class,
Dr. Drew
Here is a bit more information about me below.
Education and experience:
Ph.D. University of California Riverside - Plant Biology with a concentration in Ethnobotany. This means I explored how families use plants, I held botany workshops in schools, and I did field and laboratory work on the biology of these plants.
M.S. Loma Linda University - Biomedical Sciences with a focus on physiology. This means that I had the fortune to research how arteries develop in the brain, use a proton beam for experiments in the NASA Lab, and learn how to write scientific articles.
B.S. Walla Walla University - Biochemistry with a focus on onion and garlic chemistry. This means that I stunk up my mother's house with the distillation of onion scents to explore the wonderful world of sulfur chemistry.
U.C. Davis Entrepreneurship Academy - Week-long course on entrepreneurship.
École des Entrepreneurs du Québec - Year-long course on entrepreneurship.
