Are you intrigued by slithery things? Have you always wondered which snakes lay eggs? How are snakes born? Why do some snakes have so many different colors? This course is for you! Instructor Leyla, known to schools and other youth organizations in Central Ohio as “The Snake Lady,” is here with her cold-blooded ambassadors to teach you about their fascinating world! Join Leyla along with Persephone, Kismet, Andromeda, Cupid, Rebel, Willow, Saffron, Harley, and Bad Panko to learn in-depth information about snakes. Snake reproduction is not as straight-forward as mammals, so we will take a good look at how snakes reproduce. We’ll discuss which snakes give birth to live young and which ones lay eggs. We’ll discuss how long it takes for eggs to hatch and compare maternal incubation with artificial incubation (if I have a clutch of eggs, students will get to see actual eggs incubating). And what exactly do you do when baby snakes hatch or are born? Genetics is fascinating, but snake genetics is AMAZING! Did you know that each snake that hatches from a Ball Python egg can be a completely different morph? Hey! What’s a morph? Well, we’ll cover all of that and more as we explore the outstanding world of snake genetics and delve into genetic terminology like homozygous and heterozygous…and what you have to do to get a recessive gene to appear? Leyla strongly believes we learn through asking questions, so ALL sessions will be open to YOUR questions about snakes…and will have actual live animals during the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been involved with multiple species of animals my entire life...but I've always been intrigued by snakes. When I was young, I encountered a garter snake in my yard; I screamed and my dad ran to me, "killed" it, and put it in the trash. Later, I went to show the snake to my friends. I opened the trash can lid, and the snake jumped out at us to escape! Of course, I screamed again and my dad came running...but this time, he caught the little snake and chose to educate us on the little guy vs. discarding it again. My dad was an avid outdoorsman, so he took the time to educate us on the snake and why it was so important to let it live. Since then, I've loved snakes. Education turned fear into respect.
I have worked exclusively with various species of snakes for over 8 years. I teach snake conservation at a variety of elementary schools, youth groups, discovery camps, and 4-H groups to all ages. My snake ambassadors and I enjoy dispelling myths about snakes and showing students that snakes are incredibly beneficial and fascinating creatures. I have been a regular contributor to a reptile magazine and have been sourced by media for articles on reptile rescue and snakes. My exotic vet even consults me on occasion regarding Ball Python husbandry as she knows I'm a knowledgable resource. I have also worked hands-on with reptile rescue (specific to snakes). I am a member of the United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK). Additionally, as a hobbyist, I breed Ball Pythons, manage an education page on Facebook, and identify snake species when requested.
Much of what is "general information" about snakes is actually based on misunderstood information and myth. I see snakes as sort of an underdog in the animal world and I love being their advocate and helping students appreciate them. In every class I have taught, I have had a handful of students tell me how much I made them love snakes (even though they may have been a little scared beforehand). There is nothing quite like having an excited little girl, the same age I was when a frantic garter snake jumped out of my trash can, smile at me and tell me she wants to teach kids about snakes when she gets older too. :)
