Smoky Mountains Grammar: What Is an Adverb?

30 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Autumn has come to the Smokies, and the colorful leaves are falling silently to the ground. In this class, your child will enjoy a fun mountain theme while learning all about adverbs. Using colorful slides I've created with fun clip-art, we will explore four questions that adverbs answer: how, when, where, and how often? Students will make their own sentences choosing appropriate adverbs from word banks to familiarize them with some of the most commonly used adverbs. Mastering adverbs will prepare students to write with a bit more finesse. Upon completion of the class, students may download some worksheets for extra practice. I recommend that students take my class on verbs or have a good understanding of them before registering. This adverbs class is perfect for the advanced first-grader, on-level second-grader, and the third-grader who needs a little review.
Learning Goals
Students will learn that adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They will learn four questions adverbs answer: how, when, where, and how often.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University
Howdy from East Tennessee! I’m Shelley Greaney, and I love teaching on Outschool. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University, majoring in journalism with a minor in English. I'm a mother of six, grandmother of five, and I home schooled all of my children for a total of 26 years. I began teaching online five years ago as an ESL teacher and then started nutrition and grammar classes on Outschool. I also taught as a volunteer for elementary-aged children for ten years.
As a true grammar nerd, I offer foundational grammar classes for grades one, two, and three. The Great Grammar Adventure, a 29-week ongoing class, covers over a semester’s worth of grammar topics with two writing units, as well. I'm always looking for ways to make grammar more interesting for students.
I also teach First Grade Curriculum for K-1st graders. This class meets three times per week and covers a variety of topics including phonics, math, language arts, telling time on an analog clock, reading a calendar, social skills, and so much more. Students enjoy a new theme every week, worksheets to reinforce what we learn in class, and Show & Tell at the end of every class.
I believe learning should always be engaging, fun, and practical, and I work very hard to make sure each student, regardless of level, feels successful in class. I incorporate fun-themed slides, open-ended questions, scaffolding, and discussion to keep kids interested and engaged in class. I believe in letting kids share and participate in class, while maintaining an organized learning atmosphere. Lots of smiles and laughter are welcome in my classroom every day. I hope to see your child in my zoom room sometime soon.
