It's springtime in the Smokies, and the mountains are buzzing with activity as the plants and critters come alive again after a long winter. Using colorful slides I've created with clip-art, students will learn the seven coordinating conjunctions along with the bonus conjunction "because." Conjunctions are joining words, and we'll have plenty of practice joining words and groups of words together. We will work on an acronym to help learners remember these conjunctions and get some practice using them in sentences. We'll talk about when to use different conjunctions depending on the information we're trying to convey. We will also cover the correct usage of correlative conjunctions "either/or" and "neither/nor." Students will get to make some choices of their own using the different types of conjunctions. I'll include some printable sheets with this class with review information and extra practice for your student. This class is perfect for the advanced first-grader, on-level second-grader, and the third-grader who needs a little review.
Learning Goals
Students will learn eight coordinating conjunctions and how to use them along with two common correlative conjunctions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M University
Howdy from East Tennessee! I’m Shelley Greaney, and I love teaching on Outschool. I earned my bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University, majoring in journalism with a minor in English. I'm a mother of six, grandmother of five, and I home schooled all of my children for a total of 26 years. I began teaching online five years ago as an ESL teacher and then started nutrition and grammar classes on Outschool. I also taught as a volunteer for elementary-aged children for ten years.
As a true grammar nerd, I offer foundational grammar classes for grades one, two, and three. The Great Grammar Adventure, a 29-week ongoing class, covers over a semester’s worth of grammar topics with two writing units, as well. I'm always looking for ways to make grammar more interesting for students.
I also teach First Grade Curriculum for K-1st graders. This class meets three times per week and covers a variety of topics including phonics, math, language arts, telling time on an analog clock, reading a calendar, social skills, and so much more. Students enjoy a new theme every week, worksheets to reinforce what we learn in class, and Show & Tell at the end of every class.
I believe learning should always be engaging, fun, and practical, and I work very hard to make sure each student, regardless of level, feels successful in class. I incorporate fun-themed slides, open-ended questions, scaffolding, and discussion to keep kids interested and engaged in class. I believe in letting kids share and participate in class, while maintaining an organized learning atmosphere. Lots of smiles and laughter are welcome in my classroom every day. I hope to see your child in my zoom room sometime soon.
