Class Experience

According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science"...and who wonders better than a child?

Do you wonder about the world around you? Are you ready to become a smart scientist? In this 10-week flex course, students will explore and investigate a new science topic each week. Through activities designed to foster engagement, creativity, and critical thinking, students will explore and experience nature and animals. This class has no live sessions, but will be conducted through short videos, presentations, and hands-on learning activities to be done at home. The week's videos and assignments will be posted by Monday morning and can be completed on your own time during the week. Our young scientists will interact and submit responses throughout each presentation and will be required to share a short video or picture of themselves completing their home learning.

Each week will feature the following:
-an introductory video from Ms. Meg
-a literature connection through a video read-aloud and an accompanying craft with step-by-step instructions
-an interactive Google or Nearpod presentation for students to engage and explore the topic
-instructions for an at-home investigation/experiment
-extension activities and cross-curricular connections
-a puzzle piece to create a picture by the course's end

Some example activities you may complete during our course: Build a bird feeder, Tornado in a Bottle, Sink or Float Investigation, open-ended STEAM challenges and many many more!

While there are NO live class sessions, our Smart Science students will become a learning community in which interaction and communication will extend learning. During the course of the 10-weeks, learners will interact with each other by sharing pictures or videos of their investigations and projects and commenting on each other's posts. The scientists will learn and grow their communication and problem solving skills by collaborating with each other on different tasks. They will be able to record their learning and wonderings in a printable Smart Science Notebook, or can use a blank notebook of your choosing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Meg and I'm an elementary teacher who adores books and art. My family lives in Southern California, but I will always be a New Yorker at heart (Let's go Mets!). I was a classroom teacher for 11 years and have a Masters Degree in Reading Instruction. I taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and have run a small preschool story-time for the last 2 years. As the mom of 2 young boys, I have developed a love of science (particularly bugs, space, animals, and the weather), any and all vehicles, and engineering (thanks to my little Legos-and-blocks-lovers).

I am so excited to create classes that pull from these various areas and interests and to provide cross-curricular lessons that will engage diverse learners in topics that interest them.

I firmly believe that all children are capable and that learning is not limited to the confines of a classroom. Learning is a natural process that should be FUN and motivating! I want to prepare my students to be competent, confident, caring and curious individuals. I hope to create a fun, student-centered environment and to provide a strong foundation for lifelong learning and critical thinking. My instruction utilizes methods that appeal to a variety of learning styles and incorporate play-based, interest-led lessons.

In my classes, authentic literary experiences and motivating topics will hook children to enjoy learning and provide context with which to understand the world we live in. My goal is to provide classes that students will both love and learn from, each with a foundation in quality literature and engaging instruction, assignments, and discussion.

I look forward to "meeting" each of you and can't wait to share our learning with each other.
