Class Experience

This Waldorf Steiner support class offers a small class size so your child can focus on improving his / her literacy skills while having more teacher focus time and peer support. This class is designed as a support intervention class for students who are struggling in their large class lessons and follows the Waldorf Steiner curriculum and approach. I use a range of teaching techniques, suitable for the needs of children in the class, including the use of manipulatives (playdough, clay and beeswax), art, story and explicit teaching.

The benefits of this small group environment include peer support (some children don't like being alone in a virtual classroom with a teacher) and cooperative learning, more diverse games to stretch children's knowledge, more cost effective for families, and using the diversity of the group to work through various areas of the literacy curriculum which might not have been developed in a single child.

The class focus will change weekly to meet the ongoing needs of the group. If you are looking to join after a class session has started, the new children can join the routine of the class as I check their individual needs and make ongoing changes as needed. If the sessions have already begun and you would like to sign up, please message me with some prior information about your child so I am able to meet their needs before their first class. Otherwise, they are also welcome to have a one-on-one session with me prior to joining the small group and I can make adjustments to the class when they join.

**This class is limited to 4 students only.

This class will specifically focus on literacy:
Writing (alphabet knowledge of written and sound, blends and digraphs, CVC words, word families and more), sentence structure and punctuation
Reading (using the foundations of word sounds and building with CVC words and word families to build more complex language and reading skills).

The class routine, within a 30 minute session, is as follows:
-class verse
-hand and finger warm up exercise
(-possibly some form drawing in some sessions)
-games
-session with review and new teachings
-class verse

There is always times for questions and I make my classes casual so children feel comfortable to stop me any time and ask questions.

As this class works with the students needs on a week to week schedule, there is no set format for what will be taught in advance. I will, however, base my first class on these following principles.

Week 1 (June 9th) : capital and lower case letter formation (written), sounds of letters (including blends and digraphs), CVC words and word families
Week 2 (June 16th): CVC words, word families, writing words
Week 3 (June 23rd): Magic Words, more word families, writing simple sentences
Week 4 (June 30th): Magic Words, word families, simple sentences (independent)

There will be word reading, sentence reading and writing every week.
Learning Goals
Students will increase their understanding and use of literacy through the Waldorf Steiner curriculum approach. They will have greater understanding of word sounds, word formations and spelling rules, and improve reading and writing.
