Class Experience

Welcome! I am Miss Alex, a professional singer, musician, actor, writer, and board-certified music therapist (MT-BC). I specialize in working with kids of all ages and have been fortunate to work with thousands of kids and teens of all ages throughout my varied professional career (so far!). I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Performing Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Therapy. My performing career includes musical theatre performance, theatre performance, vocal performance, and film/television/commercial acting. I love sharing my experience with learners of all ages!

This class is a supportive, friendly way to encourage and grow a love of singing, specifically through musical theatre songs. Learners will practice vocal technique through exercises related to posture, breathing, release of tension, pitch accuracy and awareness, and musicality. Each learner will practice these exercises as a group, led by the teacher, with use of live guitar or keyboard music.

Learners will be guided through musical theatre songs, as a group. Lyrics will be provided to print before each new song is introduced. Learners may purchase sheet music, if they prefer, and links to purchase sheet music will be available upon request.

Each class will focus on one musical theatre song. We will spend about two classes on each song, though this is subject to change, depending on the needs of the learners in the group. Occasionally, we will include songs of other genres, that will also help to build our singing technique (usually, these are learner requested, and I try to accommodate when I feel the requests will benefit the class). There are occasional weeks where we will have an "extra solo week" where we will review some of the pieces that we've worked on previously to allow for further growth and additional solo opportunities with those pieces. Do not worry if you are just joining class on an "extra solo" week. I will make sure to review pieces thoroughly enough that new learners will be able to vocally jump right in.

Note: The classes are not sequential in nature. You do not have to have attended any previous class to jump in and work on the current song!

Learners must be comfortable using the mute/unmute button. Parts of the class will be taught with singers following along with the teacher on mute, with opportunities for each singer individually to unmute (as comfortable), to be heard by the teacher and other learners.

Note: Lyrics to each song will be provided. A link to purchase sheet music for each song will be provided upon request.

Hello! My name is Miss Alexandra (Miss Alex) (she/her), and I am a singer, musician, actor, writer, and board-certified music therapist (MT-BC). I specialize in working with kids of all ages and have been fortunate to work with thousands of kids and teens of all ages throughout my varied professional career (so far!).

*Please note that despite my background and certification in music therapy, classes on Outschool are educational only and do NOT serve as therapy.*

I began teaching musical theatre camps for children ages 5 to 11, a decade ago. I taught the foundational skills of theatre, music, and dance to these students and really enjoyed helping them to put together a complete musical for their families and loved ones to see at the end of the session.

During this time, I was studying in college towards my Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance and my Bachelor’s of Music in Music Therapy, which I earned in 2015 and 2016, respectively. While studying music therapy, I worked with children ages 3 and up in therapeutic settings in schools, medical centers, and more. I went on to an internship at the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH, where I was the music therapy intern, eventually managing a full-time caseload of music therapy patients, ranging from infants up to age 18.

I hold a Master of Fine Arts degree in Performing Arts, and my training during this time was acting focused. I am an active, professional performer with a resume that spans film/television/commercial acting, musical theatre, opera, theatre, and vocal performance. It is my joy to bring this experience to my students.

I have been teaching private voice lessons for over ten years, for ages 5 to adult, piano lessons for about eight years, and more recently added guitar lessons to my teaching portfolio. I also have three years' experience as a nanny for a toddler/young school age child, providing learning through play activities, materials, and plans for her, and facilitating her exploration, learning, and growth. I was an online ESL teacher for two years and taught hundreds of children through that platform.

I believe that everyone has music and creativity within them! I take a holistic approach to teaching, making sure that my learners are not just learning in a general sense but are comfortable in class and growing as human beings, and I make sure to adapt to the needs of the individual learners in each and every class. Many of my student have shared that their singing lessons and classes with me have helped them to feel more confident. I feel very honored to be able to help guide this growth.

I love helping learners discover their unique voice, both literally through singing, and in other ways, through playing an instrument or creating a character or story through acting! My classroom is an inclusive and safe space for all students.

I love animals, documentaries, all things Disney, plants (I have over 30 plants in my house and a garden outside), crafting/creating, cheese, dark chocolate, and spending time with my family! I am married to my awesome husband who is also an actor and acting teacher on Outschool! We have a tuxedo cat named Simon who is full of personality and loves to eat spinach leaves as a treat and a white and tabby cat named Sybil who loves to look out the window and play with string and feather toys.

I can't wait to welcome you into my classroom and learn together!
