Class Experience

This class is modeled after my small group guided reading lessons used in my multi-age classroom for kindergarten through second grade. Learning is very social activity so I feel students benefit most from this type of setting. The lesson is divided into two parts: word work and fluency. The first lesson of the week will focus on phonics skills that are needed to be successful at decoding. The second part of the weekly lesson will focus on building fluency in leveled text appropriate for each learner. The lessons will be structured with my Together, Try, Apply framework so students can practice the concept with a gradual release of responsibility. There will be a short mini-lesson to introduce each concept followed by guided practice. Our first month will focus on What Good Readers Do. Our word work will follow an Orton-Gillingham direct, systematic, multi-sensory instruction focusing on consonant sounds and short vowels. Reading strategy work will begin with previewing the text and using the picture clues to make meaning in the story.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Teaching has been my passion for the last 17 years. I spent 15 years teaching K-3 in a public school and 2 years as a private tutor for striving learners ages 5-10. My favorite quote is that “the best teachers are those that show you where to look, but do not tell you what to see!” When I am not teaching or spending time with my family, you will definitely find me snuggling some foster puppies. We work with a local rescue and have fostered about a dozen pups as they waited for their forever family to find them.
