Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
This club activity will teach anything from United States, World History, Western Civilization, or Ancient History that students find of interest. We will cover as many topics relevant to the chosen subject as time allows.

Although the topics are based on student interest, this can include military history, political history, environmental history, social history, economic history, intellectual history, and so on. (I have taken courses in all of these areas at the PhD level.) More specific examples include the World Wars, the American Constitution, the Columbian Exchange, the history of slavery, or the ideas behind fascism, just to name a handful.

The structure of the club activity is very open. I will have slides with visuals and some text to help the students. The rest of the time will be a combination of my sharing information and students discussing and asking questions. Thus, I would describe the teaching style as a mix of discussion and presentation of content. I present the content through maps, illustrations, paintings, photographs, historical documents, etc., helping raise questions for the students and deepening their understanding of the subject matter through real historical examples.

Learner interaction should be a substantial portion of our time. My hope is to encourage curiosity and help students learn how to communicate ideas about history. Above all, the goal is to engage students with content they find interesting and would like to learn more about.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to discuss their knowledge with peers and teachers.
We will focus on the 5 Ws of history: what happened, when it happened, who was involved, where it happened, and why it matters.

Other Details

Learning Needs
This offering is flexible. If the parent lets me know things helpful to teach their student(s), I can probably work them into the lessons.
Parental Guidance
Because students choose what they want to learn about, the only parental guidance needed would be to clear the topic with parents before sending it along to me to develop a lesson.
Pre-Requisites
There are no prerequisites for this club and enrichment offering. It is based entirely on what students would like to learn about. Other than basic reading ability, there are no required skills.
