Description

Class Experience

Students will learn about different types and parts of fabrics.
Students will learn about the parts of a sewing machine.
Students will learn basic sewing machine skills.
Students will learn to cut fabric.
Students will make a pillowcase and a drawstring bag.
I learned to sew in 4-H when I was a teenager, and I started sewing again when I was pregnant with my first daughter 21 years ago. I have helped teach many 4-H members how to sew through our club sewing meetings, and I have been teaching sewing on Outschool for about 18 months through my t-shirt quilt flex class.
This class is all FLEX, but I will expect students to participate in each activity. You should be able to complete all class activities in about 2 hours a week.

This class is for beginning sewists with adult supervision. Cutting and sewing fabric requires tools that can be dangerous if not used correctly, so please make sure you work with your child to keep them safe.
General supplies you will need for this class: Sewing machine with needles (I recommend heavy duty needles size 90/14 or 100/16) Sewing scissors Pins Sewing measuring tape Chalk or fabric marker Black marker Yardstick or cutting ruler Rotary cutter and cutting mat (optional) I recommend waiting until after watching the first week videos to get the following supplies for your projects. For the pillowcase you will need: 1 yard of the main fabric 1/3 yard of the accent fabric Thread to match For the drawstring bag you will need: 5/8 yard of fabric 2 yards coordinating ribbon Safety pin Lighter (to singe the edges of the ribbon and keep them from unraveling)
Can learners talk about different types and parts of fabric?
Can students name different parts of a sewing machine?
Did students demonstrate basic sewing machine skills?
Can students cut fabric?
Did students make a pillowcase and drawstring bag?
Did students have fun?
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
