Sleep Science-A Summer Camp
Class experience
In this one-week summer camp that meets three times, students will explore the science behind sleep. Class One: Why do we sleep? Students will learn the three main reasons that a human body must sleep and explore the area of the brain where each stage of sleep originates from. Students will be able to learn the three parts of the brain where sleep takes place as well as how the amygdala shapes dreams. Students will be learn about sleep disorders and be able to discuss whether they or family members may experience these. Students will learn 5 ways to improve their own sleep habits. Science definitions such as frequency, amplitude, and neurons will be reviewed.
I have been the Coordinator for a hospital-based sleep disorders lab for the last 10 years and am a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. I have worked with thousands of patients over the years running sleep studies and improving sleep disorders. I currently teach to the public on how to improve sleep hygiene and spent 10 years prior to this teaching middle school science.
Homework Offered
Prior to the third class, students will be assigned to fill out a dream journal page as well as presenting a short fact/paragraph that they research about how other cultures view dreaming. We will be speaking about both of these during our final (third) class.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

Activities are not mandatory and can be adapted to fit the needs of each individual learner. Notes and homework can be digitally manipulated if student prefers, graded or not, no reading out loud in class.
