Follow along with the Iditarod Race!!! Students will analyze information on Alaskan Terrain, weather and mushers before th race sets off. Each student will create a musher and skill set and work with a partner on their own journey alongside of The Great Race. Students will each choose a musher from the race that they think has the best chance of winning. Students will have access to see results and follow their musher. After the race begins students will gain background information on sled dogs, cities in Alaska, diphtheria, and the early 1900s. We will begin by discussing Fiction vs Non-Fiction and what living conditions were like 100-200 years ago so students can really envision what a different time period it was. We will read Non-Fiction passages about Balto, Togo and other true sled dog stories. We will read about Akiak and other fictionalized sled-dog stories. Students will discuss the passages and answer comprehension questions along the way. Students will participate in interactive in class games (such as Jeopardy), complete a group project (escape room), and have an individual STEM assignment. If time allows we will watch clips from the Balto and Togo films. Week 1: Background and History Week 2: Iditarod Race, Akiak —Fiction Stories Week 3: Balto and Togo— NonFiction Week 4: Group Project and Individual Assignment New: We will follow along with the 2021 Iditarod Race and see if our musher wins!!

Parental Guidance
We will be reading true stories about people being sick and how these amazing sled dogs helped bring medicine to the remotest locations. Some students may tear up in or after class. My goal is to show how special animals can be and the bond humans can have with them.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Kathy and I live in Southern California. I love working with students all around the World and of all different ages. I mainly teach classes that are Language Arts based (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar). I also teach about Historical figures, especially if I can tie them into Literature. I also love teaching about animals, and doing story time for the younger kids.
I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have taught in traditional school settings, charter schools, home schooled my own children, and taught online. I have a BA in English as well as a K-12 Teaching Credential. I am very passionate about helping people learn to love reading and writing. I also love to help people that need a little extra help with spelling and grammar. It makes me so proud and happy to have a student tell me how much they think they are improving or to get answers correct on something they missed before.
My approach to teaching is interactive and hands on. I want my students to learn while having fun. I ask a lot of comprehension questions, group work, pair work, and projects (depending on the class). I try to do as much of the work in class as possible so that kids can still be kids once they are done.
My background is in English but I love History and Science too (especially the experiments). It wouldn't be unusual in one of my classes to have to make something that just pops into my mind because it seems fun. I love animals, chocolate, and all things Disney!
