*This is a 4-week flex-course with no live meetings. Videos, assignments, links, and instructions will be posted on Tuesdays by 1:00pm PST (21:00GMT). Students will post all of their assignments no later than 1:00pm PST the following Monday. In addition to posting their assignments, students will also be expected to comment and respond to other students' posts. Students will learn to better understand poetry as a whole while becoming more familiar with spoken word. Students will learn to analyze and discuss poetry and performance.
I have been a high school AP English teacher and speech and debate coach for 15 year. I also have an extensive background in theater and consider myself to be a storyteller, writer, and poet.
Homework OfferedAll assignments will be posted on Tuesdays by 1:00pm PST (21:00 GMT). Students will post their assignments prior to Monday at 1:00pm PST. Week 1-Course introduction. "I Wanna Hear a Poem" Steve Colman "Introduction to Poetry" Billy Collins An introductory video will be posted explaining in detail the assignments of the class and how to complete them. We will also discuss specific poetic devices, paying close attention to sound (rhyme, rhythm, meter, fluctuation, alliteration, etc) Students will receive a poetry chart and taught how to complete it. Students will be taught how to understand a poem and find its MOWAW (Meaning Of the Work As a Whole). Most importantly, students will learn that poetry is about personal experience. Students will be provided with links to multiple poems and will be asked to post responses to those poems and comment on. Poems selected during the first week will serve as examples of things to come. Students will also understand the difference between spoken word poetry and slam poetry competitions. Weeks 2-4 will follow the same format, focusing on specific poets in weeks 2 & 3, and numerous poets during week 4. Numerous links will be provided for students to view multiple poems by each of the poets. Students will be asked questions and will post their responses on the message board and respond to other posts. Students will complete one poetry try for one of the poems watched during this week. Students will work together to create a list of problematic vocabulary. Week 2- Selected poems form Taylor Mali and Rives Week 3- Selected poems from Sarah Kay, Phil Kaye, and Rudy Francisco Week 4- Cornucopia selected poems from a variety of poets. The final week will offer up a variety of different poets speaking on different topics. This should provide students with information needed so that they can find their own favorite spoken word poets.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Poems selected are all available on Youtube. In some instances, poems may address mature themes or contain mature language. All poems used would likely be rated PG-13 or below. The links to poems are the recommended poems and the ones that we will discuss in class. Students are free to omit poems at parents' discretion.
