Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
This club style class and workshop is about students working together to improve their SLAM poems. Daily format will vary based on student desires; however, the typical format will allow students to share or perform their poetry and receive feedback from the group. Students will also receive suggestions and activities to help in their growth both speaking and writing. These may include short writing activities, acting exercises, or speaking exercises. The first few weeks will focus on how to write and perform a slam poem in order to develop a club culture; however, the hope is that the course becomes student driven with student work as soon as possible.

Anticipated Schedule

I have been a high school English teacher and speech and debate coach for over 15 years. I love poetry, especially spoken word poetry, and have had tremendous success with teaching it in my classroom. I also have an extensive background in theater. Spoken word poetry combines my love of literature and poetry with my love of drama and performance.
