Class Experience

One of the best ways to organize your artistic thoughts is through sketchbooking! In this class, learners will be taught how to start a sketchbook of their very own, and will be given a prompt to get things started each day.

A sketchbook serves as a way to watch your art grow and change over time. You can experiment with different techniques, or dedicate an entire sketchbook to a specific area of interest. This class will follow the outline below for each day.

Day 1 - Decorating Our Sketchbooks
Students will decorate the covers or first pages of their sketchbooks with the things that they enjoy the most! Bring magazines, computer printouts, stickers, or drawings you’ve done in the past and some glue. Acrylic paint is also allowed, but may take some time to dry.

Day 2 - Self Portraits and Portraiture
Drawing yourself and others is a great artistic exercise. Grab a mirror or a photograph and take a crack at doing portraits of yourself or others! Any form of media is allowed, so bring your favorite art supplies to class. Class will start with a basic lesson in figure drawing, as well as how to map a person's face.

Day 3 - Still Life Pieces
Learners will have the option to draw the still life provided by the educator, or to draw something in the same room that they’re in. This lets us all see the way that others interpret the world around them!

Day 4 - Abstract Art
Sometimes, art block gets the best of us. When that happens, it can be particularly helpful to make some abstract art! On this day, we'll be exploring a handful of abstract art styles, including (but not limited to) single line drawings, blind contour line drawings, neoplasticism, and surrealism.

Day 5 - Gallery
On our last day of camp, we’ll be exploring each other’s art! Learners will be asked to come to class prepared to share come of their art, either made during class or outside of it. This means telling us about it, and why you like it so much. This is not meant to be a critique, and users will practice providing positive feedback to each other.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to various artistic techniques that will allow them to expand the way that they create art.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Art is a lifelong passion, and my journey with art started in middle school. I have worked in many different media, but my favorites are sketching, drawing, watercolor, and photography. I’ve been keeping sketchbooks for nearly 20 years, and they’ve helped me document my journey with art, as well as important milestones in my life. I want to help learners find their artistic passion and help them do the same.
