Sketchbook Drawing: Play on Words

In this ongoing class, a compound word or phrase will inspire our drawings, but instead of drawing the true meaning, we’ll use clues from the words to stretch our imaginations & draw creative & fun alternative meanings. #Creative

What's included

1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Students may need to finish or add details or color to their drawings after class if they want to take it further than our time together allows.
Grading
We will not have a formal assessment; however, Ms. Susan will engage in the brainstorming & drawing process with the students and give feedback as ideas are presented and discussed throughout the class time. We will also pause to look at each other's drawing throughout and at the end of our class to encourage and celebrate each person's progress & results.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate Level
This class is a fun way to get artists to mix their drawing skills with their great imagination to keep them drawing regularly in their sketchbooks! At the beginning of each class, Ms. Susan will give the students a specific compound word, idiom, or phrase to discuss its true meaning first.

However, instead of drawing what it truly means, the students will be challenged to draw it as if they have never heard of that word or phrase and use only clues from words within the phrase to come up with a visual idea for it. (The word that inspired the drawing on the cover of this class is HOUSECOAT, but there are many other possible solutions for this word, too.)

Students will brainstorm with each other as they are challenged to "think outside the box" to come up with a very imaginative solution that is NOT the true meaning of the word but visually matches the word or phrase. The verbal brainstorming process with the group is so good for our creative minds to help us not just draw the first thing that pops into our head but really stretch our ideas to consider all the possibilities before making our decision. The group does not even need to agree on 1 idea for everyone to do; instead, each child can choose the solution that he or she is most excited about drawing.

Children enjoy this creative challenge, and it's a great exercise for growing artists. Each child's drawing will be unique, and they can even add color to the drawings while we are in class or just keep working on more & more details or color independently after class ends.

Ms. Susan will present a different word or phrase challenge each week, so students could begin this class at any time and not be behind at all. It’s really a fun way to practice pairing our drawing skills with our creative imagination! Please understand, though, that we need to keep the specific word or phrase a complete surprise each week so that the children get the full benefit of experiencing the brainstorming session with the group & allowing their ideas to build upon each other’s. These are some general clues about the themes of our first few classes.

Week 1 (Sept 4): (A Surprise COMPOUND WORD)
Week 2 (Sept 11): (No Class Today & You Will Not Be Charged so No Need to Pause)
Week 3 (Sept 18): (A Surprise IDIOM)
Week 4 (Sept 25): (A Surprise COMPOUND WORD)
Week 5 (Oct 2): (A Surprise IDIOM)
We'll continue with the surprise words or phrases each week so that students can benefit from the brainstorming session instead of coming into class with a decision already made for their own idea.

PLEASE NOTE: This class works best with several students attending so we can build off of each others ideas. However, as we get the class started during Sept 2024, we will still have class if fewer than 2 students are attending so that we allow more time for others to join our class. In Sept, If we happen to have only 1 student in class, I will still teach it as a one-on-one drawing session but we may finish a few minutes earlier with fewer people brainstorming together. And if your child occasionally misses a class, it will still be fun for him or her to watch the video recording of our class and still make their own drawing to show us the following week.
Learning Goals
This drawing class will challenge the children to seek & draw creative and unique solutions and to stretch their ideas with important details while helping them build their abstract thinking skills.
We work on compositional & layout skills for creatively using their whole space & best choices for focal point placement. (These focal point & compositional concepts are extremely important for growing artists.)

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
Since this class is not a step-by-step drawing class, students need to feel comfortable drawing more independently and open to stretching their imagination in their sketches and brainstorming ideas aloud with fellow classmates.
Supply List
Pencils (HB only OR HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils in the brand of your choice.)
Eraser
Sharpener
Paper Tortillion OR Blending Stump (a blending tool with pointed ends made out of paper)
Colored Pencils, Crayons, or Twistables (Markers are not recommended)
Sketchbook (Smaller 5"x 7" to 8" x 10" or similar size)
Optional Ruler

Supply Tips:
(Separate pieces of Drawing Paper could be used each class instead of a Sketchbook, but a Sketchbook allows an artist to keep track of his or her work and to see progress and themes over time.)
((I do not recommend mechanical pencils for these drawings because of their shading limitations.))
(((An HB pencil may be used to sketch; however, if you'd like to invest in a few great drawing pencils that will help with shading techniques, please choose an HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencil in the brand of your choice.)))

Hi, I'm Susan Garrison, a professional artist who also loves teaching kids! I've been drawing & painting all my life and teaching children for the past 3 decades. After earning my BS Degree in Art Education K-12 from Middle Tennessee State University, I've enjoyed teaching children 2D & 3D art lessons at my own art studio, online, and in public and private schools in grades K-12 in Tennessee and South Carolina. One of my specialties has been curriculum development at each of those schools. On weekends, my husband and I even work as a team to DJ weddings and receptions.

I love breaking art projects down into bite-size pieces of simple lines & shapes for children as I lead them through the lesson step-by-step, while still encouraging options along the way so that every piece is unique. Choosing a variety of my classes will help your child develop skills and techniques for creating realistic pieces as well as tap into & build upon the beauty of his or her imagination & creative mind. My class offerings include a variety of styles & use many types of art tools & surfaces. Some classes focus on famous artists & their styles to inspire our artwork. Blending those experiences help form a well-rounded young artist.

I delight in helping children enjoy the whole creative process that leads to a lifetime of creativity and not just the end results of a single painting. A child's imagination is valued greatly and will be encouraged in our lessons.
