Description
Class Experience
Over the course of this class, students will experiment with a variety of media (charcoal, water colours, collage, etc.) as a way to encourage daily art practice in their sketchbooks but also as a way to enjoy exploration in the creation of art. Students will learn the basics of a variety of media and get the chance to practice the media in many ways over the course of the week through a series of challenges. Students will see practice as play and a way to free up their creativity. The young...
* Students will learn that art practice in their sketchbooks can be fun! * Students will learn to share and accept feedback to help grow their work. * Students will enjoy experimenting with many different media over the length of the course. * Students will become freer to create art and be less inhibited by the blank page. * Students will work towards filling an entire sketchbook, one of many I hope! * Students will appreciate the work of many artists throughout history. * Students will meet fellow young artists and learn the vocabulary used to discuss art.
I am an artist and maintain several sketchbooks. I prefer themed sketchbooks but every artist does what they love best.
Every week, students will receive 6 challenges using the media of the week. The students are encouraged to complete all 6 challenges but if they prefer to work on one or two of their favourites for a little longer, that works, too. Challenges take as little or as much time as the student chooses to devote to it.
Art supplies can range in price from really cheap to super expensive. This class is meant to experiment with various media. Because a student won't know if they will like the media, do not invest too much right away. Try “student quality” first and then if this ends up being a favourite media, go ahead later to invest in “artist's grade quality”. Having said that, do avoid really cheap media as these can be very frustrating to work with. A sketchbook for mixed media 8.5” X 11” (22 cm X 28 cm) is a versatile and portable size. Smaller can be limiting and larger can be daunting. A variety of pencils from 4H to 6B An eraser Charcoal sticks Conté including one white conté stick One (or more) sheet of black paper for charcoal and conté Water colour palette (Again, these range from very cheap palettes to very expensive blocks. As this class is meant to experiment with different media, there is no need to buy expensive paints however cheap Dollar Store palettes can be frustrating to work with. There are good “student quality” palettes available at reasonable prices at art stores.) Scissors A glue stick Magazines, gift wrap, tissue paper, or other ephemera (collection of interesting papers) Things to stamp with (rubber stamps, erasers, Silly Putty, fingers, corrugated cardboard …) If the student has worked with these before, or if a parent is supervising, lino pads and lino cutting tools, stamping inks, and brayers are wonderful. These are certainly NOT mandatory. They can be expensive. Ink pad or coloured markers Black Fine tipped Sharpie marker (If you have a variety of colours, that will be fun, too but no need to go out to buy them if you don’t have them.) Any and all media you have at home that you enjoy working with: wax and pencil crayons, acrylic paint, gouache paint, stickers, coloured markers, Copic markers, scraps of tissue, needle and thread... the only limit is your imagination.
Gentle, constructive and positive verbal feedback will be given throughout the course by peers and by the teacher.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
