Class Experience

Unleash your creativity! Dive into a world of characters, create wild predicaments, and relish the euphoria of having every single one of your ideas celebrated and brought to life. Imagination and confidence are your superpowers and we are going to turbocharge both every week, using your unique gift: YOUR sense of humor. What do YOU find funny?

Picture yourself on stage, in a courtroom, or even on an intergalactic adventure babysitting Elon Musk's screaming baby aliens who are driving you insane (yes, in this scene Elon Musk is an alien). Learn to crafting characters and scenes in the blink of an eye, seemingly effortlessly, all thanks to my three simple rules that ensure your triumph. Or I will eat my invisible hat (YES we cover mime too. But don't worry: there are no clowns.).

In my class I keep it fun and fast and "bad ideas" do not exist. Any idea can transform into gut-busting hilarious story scenario that will leave you and your fellow actors ROFL. BUT at the same time you will learn how to give your scenes depth and meaning that speak to truths you care about. This is finding your own voice: in all comedy lies truth. What truths about the world do you care about? What truths would you like to poke fun of? Jeff Bezos? Amazon Prime? Grimace's Milk Shakes???

This is exactly why improv is like a fine sword you can sharpen. It's an actor's secret weapon. 🚀💫

Here's what you can expect in our classes:

Fun Warm-Up: We start with a fun warm-up to get rid of nerves and get you moving and making noise. You don't need much space for this, so it's inclusive for all mobility.

Group Games: We play games related to our weekly lesson, and I have a wide variety of lessons to choose from, some classic formats and many I have created specifically for this class.

Acting and Improv: We work on new skills through exercises. You'll be up and active, but there's no pressure to do anything you're not comfortable with.

Scene Creation: We spend time creating scenes with inspiration from various sources. It's all about learning, having fun, and boosting your confidence and finding your voice.

Class Activities: We finish with fun activities, like improv competitions or more scene work. You'll have the chance to pursue your own ideas and heighten, extend or expand them in to full epic stories.

Expect lots of laughter!

Learning Goals

Because of my three basic rules, the following are encouraged and promoted for all students regardless of experience level:

-Students learn to focus their minds and increase concentration
-They practice and understand the importance of respect and teamwork.
-They build confidence and gain tools to deal with nervousness or shyness through breathing and relaxation techniques, as well as through the success of performing with other students
-They develop tools to “think outside the box” and generate new ideas’ in the moment’
-They learn how to shape and direct stories and narratives through miniature plots to ultimate resolutions

When a student comes up with a new and spontaneous idea in the moment, and it works, they feel the instant thrill of success. They get a laugh from their group peers and they develop a new and deeper connection with their scene partner(s). My goal for every student is to equip them with the tools to be able to achieve that moment and experience that success for themselves.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I make best efforts to avoid politics and religion or more "gruesome" subjects (horror and crime), but sooner or later a student will cast him or herself in the role of a religious leader or famous politician, or set a scene in a church or the Whitehouse etc., or pretend to be a serial killer or an investigator following up on the discovery of a body.... This is fictional drama and comedy. It is make-believe and it is important to the process to let their imaginations open up. We want them to explore their ideas unrestricted, as long as their ideas do not denigrate others or make another learner uncomfortable. I give all the students the option to chat me privately if they are uncomfortable with an idea so they can voice a concern without drawing attention to themself. Also, while I maintain a safe zone of inclusivity for all faiths and ideologies: hate speech, prejudice or cyber bullying will not be allowed and parents will be notified.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have over 250 credits on the IMDB but I am most often recognized from tv shows and movies such as:

Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda "Harper"
The Bride of Chucky "David"
YTV - Live After School Zone host for many years (the first host!)
Supernatural - various different characters (I died 3 times on that show lol)
Kung Fu The Legend Continues

I am also currently a member of the Maestro! Improv ensemble in Vancouver BC, Canada, where I perform live, every week, doing exactly what I teach in this class at the Tightrope Impro Theatre on Main st. If you are in the area come see us!

I try to keep working to stay fresh so I can continue to bring actual life experience and examples to class and often I will rework a lesson to reflect something interesting that happened on stage that week.

For more about me look me up on youtube, tiktok, the imdb or read my profile.

Thank you so much for your interest in my class!
