Class Experience

US Grade 6
This 16-week course is designed for students to dive deep into the world of character development, thematic exploration, and narrative techniques through the study of short stories and novels. Focusing on Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan, students will explore themes of survival, choice, freedom, and hope. The course will incorporate structured discussions, analytical essays, and interactive activities that promote critical thinking and literary analysis.

This is an academically focused class that requires reading and assignments between classes. All submitted assignments will receive individualized feedback. It will be discussion based with many journal prompts, think sheets, and graphic organizers designed to dive deep into these texts.

Please preview the short stories before enrollment and check out Common Sense Media to ensure that these novels are the right fit for your learner and family.
