Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
WRITE FREELY IN A SAFE, COZY SPACE!

In this warm & fuzzy guided writing club, we gently build a habit of writing “freely”—as in, writing impromptu, naturally—without worrying about errors or mechanics.

The idea behind freewriting is to overcome any hesitation of putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!) any time we need to write.

It’s also a powerful tool for self-reflection & self-expression.

Each session, I greet learners, we share what's "in our mug today" (literally or figuratively!), and create a calm, cozy state of mind.

Then I put up our creative writing prompt, which focuses on learners’ own lives, thoughts, feelings, or imaginations.

We will have 10 minutes of uninterrupted writing time—the freewriting, habit-building practice of intentionally keeping the time short but fingers moving for all of it.

After writing, we process together and close cozily, bringing some calm with us into our day!

TEACHER APPROACH

I aim for my writing groups to be fun, engaging & inclusive—safe spaces for learners to bring their whole selves.

I hope to lead by example & encourage students to embrace the joys (& sometimes struggles) of writing.

Through regular writing time, we can build a habit of writing naturally.

Through reflective writing, we can get to know ourselves, unlock ideas, and find our own best ways to help the world.

This writing club can supplement any ELA or writing curriculum for homeschoolers or after-schoolers.

Lastly, I provide an optional Freewriting Pages PDF (in my welcome post after you enroll) for easy work samples or homeschool portfolios!

Learning Goals

•	Develop creative thinking, self-reflection & writing skills
•	Overcome hesitancy to put pen to paper and write

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some of our prompts will include writing about our life experiences, and I will guide students to avoid sharing aloud any details that reveal identifying information. I will also guide & check in with any learner who shares a difficult life experience in their writing.
Supply List
Please bring something to write with/on and a mug/drink to sip while we gather! (A Freewriting Pages PDF is provided when you enroll.) I encourage learners to practice writing by hand, though typing is fine as well.
 1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Writing prompts used are gathered and/or written by me, specifically for this age group.
