Class Experience

This lesson is an introductory lesson to Touch Math strategies for adding single-digits. As a class, we will review counting to 20, discover touchpoints on numbers 0-9, and practice using touchpoints to add single-digit numbers. Each learner will have the chance to apply their understanding of the strategy by working together to solve a series of ten practice addition problems to fill up the class token board. A downloadable worksheet will also be provided so that your learner can practice touch math addition. I believe that students should be introduced to a variety of strategies to apply math calculation skills in a way that works and makes sense to them. This class is ideal for students who are ready to be introduced to counting numbers to 20, addition, and those who need to skill improvement.
Schedule:
5 min talk about strategies for solving addition problems.
3 min warm-up - count to twenty
10 min touchpoints search on numbers 0-9

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Chandra K. I am a Special Education Teacher for grades kindergarten through fifth grade. I teach in a resource room where I support students with learning disabilities to build foundational math and reading skills and strategies they can apply in their classrooms. I have supported students and assisted teachers in the elementary grades as a paraeducator for five years while attending Ashford University and earning a B.A. in Early Childhood Education. I went on to earn a Special Education teaching credential through Brandman University while working as an intern resource room teacher for one year. I am currently teaching in the same occupation and attending Brandman University to earn an M.A in Special Education. I value each student's unique contributions to the learning experience and believe that all students are capable of learning when they are guided with the appropriate instructional techniques to help them realize their potential. I absolutely live for those moments when I see young learner's faces light up because they find understanding in a concept and can confidently apply what they have learned to demonstrate their new-found knowledge.
