Class Experience

Birdy's songs bring us a wonderful opportunity to learn about singing in the high and middle registers of the voice, as she uses these upper registers a lot in her singing and songwriting. We will practice professional vocal technique exercises before singing our favorite Birdy songs. Class size is kept small to allow for individual attention to ensure that each student is singing with proper coordination of the vocal technique. We focus not only on 'what' we sing (the notes of the melody in songs) but 'how' we sing, encouraging balance, healthy placement and coordination in the voice. Students will also learn about posture, proper registration, breath, basic music theory for singers, the use of diphthongs in singing, acting choices for the singer, and singing with an accompaniment track.
My goal for the students is that they will begin to develop awareness of the technique in their voice, and be able to feel the difference between what works and what doesn’t work, enabling them to eventually become their own teachers, and able to sing freely and confidently in various musical settings. Songs are carefully selected based on student level and vocal development as well as to present different learning opportunities and balance in the voice.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have worked with this professional vocal technique since 1998. I have taught young singers in the NYC metropolitan area since 2012 and have seen their voices develop with freedom throughout the range of the voice. I have observed hours and hours of voice lessons of children Broadway singers in NYC using this technique. I love helping young singers discover and understand their unique voice and sing with confidence and freedom.
