Class Experience
This ongoing course is designed to improve learners' bar modeling skills with more challenging math topics. Learners will be guided through to solve word problems that involve four operations of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. They will also be challenged to work through multi-step word problems. Learners will focus less on concrete manipulatives and more on pictorial and abstract mathematical representations. Prerequisite: This course expects students to have a basic understanding of...
1. Learners will master how to draw part-whole and comparison models to solve word problems involving the four operations of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. 2. Learners will learn how to solve multi-step word problems. 3. Learners will work on addition and subtraction skills (no limit), multiplication and division skills (by 2-digit number), four operations of fractions and decimals. 4. Learners will master writing number sentences involving four operations of whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
All courses are taught by me, Ms. Wenxi. Not only have I taught Singapore math for 6 years, I also went through Singapore math myself growing up in Singapore. I know what it's like to learn bar modeling for the first time and experience Singapore's approach. I have a BA in mathematics and art history and am currently a PhD candidate in mathematics education, with a focus on Singapore math and elementary learners.
Learners can complete optional homework problems included in the curriculum. There are about 3-5 homework problems in each week's material. It is recommended that learners do these problems to practice and review what they have learned in class but they are not expected or required to finish them.
Materials needed for class and homework will be provided digitally. We highly recommend learners to print out the materials and follow along during class. Please prepare a pencil, an eraser and a ruler for every class.
Teacher will provide notes and observations to parents after every class.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
