US Grade 5
Early registration, Sibling and Bundle discounts available (https://www.desteam.org/VirtualCamp.html) This course is designed based on Singapore math and Math League Contest Books for current and rising 5th grade to establish strong understanding of math concepts, learn to apply mathematics to solve real world problems, and increase problem solving speed for the math league competitions. Singapore math is a highly effective teaching approach that instills deep understanding of mathematical concepts, which is achieved through intentional sequencing of concepts. Some of the key features of the approach include the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) progression, number bonds, bar modeling, and mental math. Instead of pushing through rote memorization, students learn to think mathematically and rely on the depth of knowledge gained in previous lessons. It consists of part 5A and 5B. Each part covers 9 topics (18 topics in total), and will be reviewed in 10 days (two weeks), and 60 minutes each lesson. More than 200 questions and a "take-home" final exam will be reviewed with detailed solutions which are intended to guide students to identify a promising approach and to execute the necessary math. Students will be learning plenty of tricks to make 4th-grade math easy, and this course can also help students to prepare their math league competition as well. For a week to week program, check out the syllabus.
Learning Goals
This 5th-grade course, influenced by Singapore math and Math League Contest Books, focuses on problem-solving skills through CPA progression, number bonds, bar modeling, and mental math across 18 topics in parts 5A and 5B.
It includes intensive review over two weeks and concludes with a comprehensive final exam.
Syllabus
10 Lessons
over 10 WeeksLesson 1:
Write Simple Equations
This topic focuses on teaching students how to formulate simple equations based on given scenarios or word problems. Students learn to translate real-world situations into mathematical expressions and equations.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Remainder Problems
Remainder problems involve division where students need to understand how to calculate remainders and interpret them in context. This topic typically includes both division with remainders and solving problems that require understanding remainders.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Average Problems
Average problems involve calculating the mean or average of a set of numbers. Students learn different methods to find averages, interpret data sets, and apply averages to solve problems in various contexts.
60 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Area
The topic of area covers how to calculate the area of geometric shapes such as rectangles, squares, triangles, and composite figures. Students learn formulas for area calculation and practice applying these formulas to solve problems.
