Description
Class Experience
This class sets a positive association with learning sight words in English. After 6-weeks of attendance, learners will 1) be able to identify the sight words they have learned in class and 2) have established the habit of reading one book a day together with a grownup.
> ESL Ms. Christina began her career as an English teacher in Taiwan. > EARLY LITERACY Later, she worked for seven years in the children's department of a public library with a focus on Early Literacy and multilingual programming. > EDUCATION Ms. Christina has a Bachelor of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL POLITICS and GERMAN. She has a Master of Arts degree in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS with a language focus on MANDARIN CHINESE.
HOMEWORK: Find the word of the day somewhere around you — this could be in a book, magazine, label, or sign — take a photo of it, and upload it to the classroom message board. BONUS: Read one book together with a grownup. During my early literacy training at the public library, I learned an incredible fact: If a grownup reads to a child every day for just 20 minutes — basically one book — the child will hear 1.8 million words in one year. Therefore, Ms. Christina wants each learner to pick a book of their choice and read it together with a grown-up for homework. This can be any book in any language, and it can even be the same book every day. Not only will this daily reading habit expose the learner to 1.8 million words in a year, it will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. With reading being the cornerstone of all subsequent learning, the daily reading habit is the simplest, least expensive way to set your child up for a lifetime of success and joy.
Learners should bring a shaker (rattle, shaky egg, maraca, or anything that makes a shaky sound.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Please be available to "unmute" your learner for their turn to speak, if they cannot "unmute" themselves. Note Regarding YouTube: I never use YouTube during class — all music in class is played live by me on the ukulele or xylophone.
